WACK!
The door to the RV nearest my tent bangs open for the 87th time. The maelstrom has coated everything inside with a thick layer of fine playa dust.
The walls of my small tent bend as a 30 mph gust uproots a shade structure and crashes it into a another nearby RV.
WACK!
The sound intensifies the claustrophobia of my shiftpod confinement.
Dark techno thumps continuously in the distance, the soundtrack of apocalypse.
Someone on a megaphone drones out ominously: “WELCOME TO THE PLAYAAAAA!”
WACK!
Humans do not belong in this Mars-like hellscape.
The earth is turning on us.
Maybe today wasn’t the best day to drop acid.
WACK!
I feel something hard on the mat beneath me.
I pick the object up and see a message straight from the playa that sums it all up quite succinctly:
FUCK YOUR BURN.
Burning Man is one dusty ordeal.
Many who attend capitulate and flee the inhospitable Black Rock Desert. Burners label these the sparkle ponies (high maintenance snow flakes).
But even I, an experienced outdoorsman, found myself huddled in my tent, waiting for the white-out to pass. I felt like a lone astronaut in a tiny HAB on Mars, wondering if Mother Earth had finally turned on us, transforming her atmosphere into an unbreathable alkaline dust cloud.
Despite apocalyptic acid trips, Burning Man is much more than dust storms in the desert. It’s a legit city with 80,000 residents, a hedonistic bacchanal of epic proportions, a world class pop up art installation, and most interestingly, it’s a quasi-religion built on 10 principles.
Having just returned from my first burn, here is my “hot take.”
The TLDR:
Burning Man is more than hippies, influencers, and tech elites partying in the desert. It’s an alchemical sandbox for healing, self-discovery, and transformation.
The Black Rock Bacchanal
Getting to Black Rock City is no small task.
4 Weeks of prep, 2 days of travel, 5 hours waiting in line, all just to arrive at a dusty patch of desert in the middle of BFE. 2 sweaty days later, camp is built and the party begins.
Burning Man isn’t your normie labor day weekend festival. It’s a fully operational, master planned city that comes alive with 80K people for one week each year. Black Rock City takes months to build, and months more to tear down.
And when I say city, I mean legit city. Complete with urban planning, zoning, a grid system, neighborhoods, public plazas, streets, addresses, a DMV, a post office, and much more. The city includes emergency, medical, and sanitation infrastructure. There’s a department of public works. An airport.
It’s legit AF.
If you’ve ever played an open-world style video game, Black Rock City is a lot like that. You can roam around in any direction and find crazy shit going on.
Adult playgrounds, music venues, quirky lounges.
Hundreds of bars.
The Orgy Dome to fuck around and find out.
The Foam Dome to wash away the sins of Orgy Dome.
Every street filled to the brim with novelty. All emergent from volunteer participants instead of built by the BORG (Burning Man Organization).
The Black Rock Bacchanal knows no bounds.
As long as you got a cup (and an ID) “the playa provides brother!” Morning booze flows freely across the street at our neighbors camp—Mimosa Sunrise. I lie on the bar of Sakenoma in the afternoon sun, as a flamboyant bartender pours sake down my face (my reward for throwing a strike down the bar top that doubles as a bowling alley). Later that evening, I enjoy a cocktail at the upscale lounge Deoxidizer. All the while veteran burners hug me and “welcome me home” when they learn that this is my first burn.
Any time of day or night, there are a seemingly endless variety of venues to get buzzed (or fully blasted). All for free. And that’s to say nothing of the thousands of camps that would gladly welcome in any stranger and put a drink in their hand, just because it’s Burning Man. There truly is no bigger party on earth.
And the party doesn’t stop with alcohol.
The hippies, the yuppies, and the techies all have their drugs of choice. From ketamine to cocaine, from LSD to 2CB, from mushrooms to marijuana to molly, the drugs abound. Despite an abundance of federal officers patrolling the streets, Black Rock City has no shortage of molecules and “medicines” to cross the threshold from “the default world” and enter “the burnerverse.”
Then there are the dicks. #dustydicks4dayz.
I’ve never seen a higher concentration of male genitalia than in my week at Burning Man. I’ve truly become desensitized.
And it’s not just the dudes. Instagram models arrive in droves on the sparkle pony express, flaunting their $10,000 outfits (and even more expensive boobs ‘n butts).
But you don’t need millions of followers to flaunt the goods. Even the muggles let it all hang out. From “freeing the nip” to sexy tantric workshops, humanity’s flesh is on full display. Bodies of all shapes and sizes join the freak-fest, where sweat and dust collide to form a uniquely playan musk.
10,000 Starlinks stream the Black Rock Bacchanal to X for all to see. Thanks Elon. #playadaddy
At first glance, Black Rock City resembles a zoo overstocked with lizard-brained fuck-monkeys zooted to the gills with the entire hedonist pharmacopeia, peacocking outlandish outfits and pushing all the pleasure buttons.

The 10 Principles
Luckily, Burning Man is built on much more than hedonism. It’s built on 10 principles. Emerging organically over decades, they were then codified in 2004 by Larry Harvey, Burning Man’s original visionary and co-founder.
These principles are what peaked my curiosity and got me out to the playa in the first place. With my first burn behind me, I can confidently say that herein lies the actual juice of Burning Man.
Below are the BORG’s definition of each, along with my two cents, as well as a score for how well they held up during my first burn.
Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
The beauty of this principle is openness that permeates every camp and conversation. I’ve never experienced anywhere so easy to drop in and connect with total strangers.
10/10
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
This is one of the coolest aspects of Burning Man. I literally went a full week without pulling out my wallet. They’ve done a good job of keeping the experience protected from commercialism.
That said, Burning Man is notoriously expensive, and so much money goes into making it happen each year. The level of consumerism and Amazon packages leading up to Burning Man is off the charts.
7/10
Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
I received tons of drinks and food, as well as little gifts like chap stick, goggles, a white scarf, a tab of orange sunshine (LSD), and more!
But my favorite gifts were the hundreds of epic art pieces, sculptures, and installations spread across the playa. Artists that spent all year laboring so that a bunch of strangers could experience awe in the middle of nowhere for a week.
Plus, giving my own gifts was arguably the best part.
10/10
Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources.
The Black Rock Desert has a way of making this one mandatory, as an apocalyptic dust storm might strike at any moment. I quickly learned which items where essential for leaving camp: goggles, dust mask, water, sunscreen, lube, etc.
But then there’s the horde of sparkle ponies staying at plug ‘n play camps, totally insulated from discovering their own inner resources.
7/10
Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.
Building and striking camp definitely takes communal effort. Our first year camp was a bit disorganized, but collaboration happened all the same. Black Rock City is literally built on communal effort, with nearly everything created by volunteers.
10/10
Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
Epic art abounds at Burning Man. The creativity and self-expression is off the charts.
I even tapped into my own self expression with some inspired conversations out at the trash fence (the far parameter of Black Rock City).
11/10.
Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
80,000 people get totally unhinged for a week and yet crime in Black Rock City is far less than a similar sized city, and most of that crime is drug related (with loads of federal agents sweeping the streets lookin for drugs constantly). Deaths are rare, and usually caused by natural causes vs violence or overdose.
Compared to a similarly sized festival like Coachella or EDC, Burning Man is shockingly safe.
9/10
Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
People pick up trash, a huge upgrade from your run-of-the-mill festival. This looks nice on the surface, but underneath there is a dark side. All that MOOP (matter out of place) that gets removed from the playa just gets dumped somewhere else, usually in a local Nevada landfill.
In other words, the matter is still out of place, just at the dump.
Whats worse, durning burn week Black Rock City creates about 20% more municipal waste than an average city of the same size. Much of what is used for Burning Man is single use, destroyed by the harsh desert, or abandoned by burners retreating back to “the default world.” The city runs on diesel and the hum of generators.
5/10
Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
Most of Burning Man invites participation. Climb up the interactive sculpture to experience it like a kid. Open the hidden door on the metal elephant’s belly to reveal the tarot reading oracle within. Wander out to the blinking lightning bolt at the trash fence to drop into a 2 hour conversation under the stars with a total stranger.
I found myself opening up and participating more each day.
10/10
Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.
This one really sets Burning Man apart. I felt more present, less distracted, and more alive. My phone lived in my luggage, not in my hand. I was so enthralled with the experience, I even forgot to take pictures.
That said, not everyone uses Burning Man as a digital detox. Starlink keeps people “connected,” and the playa is full of sparkle ponies living for the ‘gram.
8/10
The 10 principles are what make Burning Man more than a festival. The principles add a deeper, even religious dimension to the Black Rock Bacchanal.
The Art
I’m riding my e-bike alongside a few friends in a full-on white-out. The dust mask, goggles, and LSD in my system turn the wild nature of the playa up to Max Max levels.
We turn our e-bike lights on, as we can’t see more than 20 feet in front of us. Riding in formation so nobody gets lost, we roam the playa in search of a magical treehouse.
A tall figure begins to emerge from the haze. When I realize what it is, my jaw drops. A 15 foot tall metal moth-man with a sword in one hand and lantern in the other illuminates the wonder within me. I can’t stop myself from stopping to gawk at the mythical creature.
We keep riding into the dusty abyss. No sense of direction. No idea what’s coming next. Just curiosity and acid nerves pedaling onward.
Then I see it.
The top of the treehouse reveals itself from the dust cloud above and all around me. Like a Shel Silverstein drawing, the upper story grows out of the tree, balancing delicately on a curved trunk down to the main level on the ground. I can’t contain myself and shout “LET’S FUCKING GO!!!” in pure stoke that this place exists at all.
As the burners say, it was “pure playa magic.”
This was just one of hundreds of art installations, and dozens of mind melting moments I experienced during burn week. The art at Burning Man is truly the tip of the spear of contemporary art in the world. The remote desert location, crazy weather conditions, and interactive nature of it all, top any art experience I’ve ever had.
The Man
Burning Man is centered around, well, burning The Man. This year, the wooden effigy soared to the heavens, standing 100 feet off the ground on a tree-like pavilion—the Axis Mundi of Burning Man.
After a week of seeing The Man looming at the center of the playa, tens of thousands gather to witness the massive image of their species finally burn on Saturday night. Fireworks and fire shows of the highest caliber dazzle spectators while a giant circle of elaborate art cars blast music in a circular perimeter around The Man. It’s a party of epic proportions.
After an hour of entertainment, The Man explodes into flames and the crowd goes wild. Never before have I witnessed such a large and diverse crowd cheering around one shared bonfire. It was powerful. There was something primordial about it—the burning man speaking uniquely to each individual.
After all, it was this one simple act that started Burning Man in the late 80’s. Since then, he has burned every year, and the crowds have only gotten larger. The shared fire ritual binds all together. The transfiguration of the human form into flame and ash liberates something within us.
This is not an orgy or even a festival. It is the magic of ritual. This is a religious experience.
The Temple
As the remnants of The Man smolder behind me, I walk the lantern lit path to The Temple to make my offering. The beautifully curved structure opens up to me like a lotus flower, and I enter. In stark contrast to the wild bonfire party just a short walk away, The Temple has a totally different energy.
It feels sacred.
Anyone would struggle to walk The Temple without tearing up, with it’s walls adorned in the grief, prayers, and offerings of thousands. With an MDMA catalyst in my system, the space evokes more than tears. I feel goosebumps down arms as I approach the east wall. There I find the charcoal artwork and letter I left there earlier that week.
Now it’s time to complete the offering and surrender it to the fire.
I wedge my feet between the vertical boards and climb the overhanging wall until I can reach the 15 foot apex. Hanging on with one hand, I remove my hat from my head and my medallion from around my neck, placing both atop the wall.
The hat is an old Utah Utes beanie that symbolizes an old chapter and an old identity. That version of me lived for the validation of his peers, masked his insecurities and depression with alcohol, and filled the god-shaped hole in his heart with money and materialism.
With gratitude for the hard lessons learned and ground gained, I say thank you and goodbye.
The True North medallion has the flower of life growing into the north star on one side, and a meditating astronaut (psychonaut) on the other. It symbolizes the project I have poured my heart and soul into over the last 7 years.
The blood, sweat, and tears are offered. The mission is offered. The prayer of a more beautiful world is offered.
As it all goes up in flames the following evening, I shed silent tears with thousands of others. Everyone solemnly paying respect to loved ones lost, pain named, and struggles surrendered. As the Temple of the Moon falls into flames, the collective howl of 10,000 let out a cathartic release.
This is alchemy.
This is a religion with no orthodoxy.
This is a community with no borders.
This is what is missing from the DNA of our culture.
This is Burning Man.
Seek Novelty, Make Art, Help Out
Burning Man is chaotic, messy, and deeply flawed.
BUT, it may just contain the codes to rebooting our culture and seeding a more beautiful world.
The small San Francisco beach burns of the 80’s have evolved into an 80,000 person Black Rock City. A fringe anarchist movement evolved into a global burner community spanning 6 continents. Regional burns happen across the planet year round, and the art created each year ripples through the collective consciousness of culture.
One simple saying kept coming to me over and over on the playa. To me, it embodies what the Burning Man movement is all about:
“Seek Novelty, Make Art, Help Out” —Jaime Wheal
And to that end, stay curious.

P.S. If you’re struggling with screen time and a fractured nervous system, I’ve got some art of my own to share (besides this blog).
It’s called Seeker, and it’s a 28-day quest to own your phone, train your brain, and find your time. It’s a digital declutter, a nervous system reset, and a float tank journey into the inner realm of psyche.
Think of it as your invitation back to immediacy, so you can suck all the marrow out of your visit to Black Rock City… the rest of your life ;)
Beautiful overview. When you describe finding the treehouse, I can visualize the exact tone, intonation, and body language of a full body, Christian Dockstader LET’S FUCKING GO!!!
Take me in 2028 babe! Great read!
